NEGRIL, Jamaica — As Jamaica prepares to host an upcoming LOVE CARIBBEAN – JAMAICA EDITION 2026 conference bringing together international wedding professionals and tourism stakeholders, attention is turning to the island’s growing reputation as a global destination wedding hub — with Negril increasingly at the center of that story.

The conference, LOVE CARIBBEAN – JAMAICA EDITION, is being staged by the International Association of Destination Wedding Professionals and will be held at the Princess Grand in Green Island, Hanover from May 11–14, 2026.  The event is already attracting planners, suppliers and industry leaders from the global wedding sector, and comes at a time when destination weddings are experiencing significant growth worldwide, and resorts across Jamaica are positioning themselves to benefit from this expanding market.

Among the key stakeholders helping to drive that growth is the global hotel brand RIU Hotels & Resorts, which operates two properties in Negril — Hotel Riu Negril and Hotel Riu Palace Tropical Bay. The company is also among the sponsors supporting the conference.

Resorts Driving the Wedding Boom

Located along the scenic shores of Bloody Bay, one of Negril’s most picturesque beachfronts, RIU’s resorts have become popular venues for couples seeking a seamless destination wedding experience.

For many couples planning weddings abroad, the appeal lies in the convenience of all-inclusive resorts, where the ceremony, reception, accommodation, and honeymoon can all be coordinated in one location.

According to Niurka Garcia Linton, Marketing and Sales Director for RIU Resorts Jamaica, the wedding segment is one of the most important areas of the hotel chain’s business.

“RIU has a very important segment which is our wedding segment,” Garcia Linton told Negril Times in a past interview. “A lot of our brides and grooms bring groups with them, so we have been creating ways where they can have their bridal party the day before, if they want to do their makeup here, have champagne or something to drink, and have space right up to the moment of the wedding.”

This approach, she said, allows couples and their guests to enjoy a stress-free celebration in paradise.

“We really are reinventing ourselves with different wedding packages,” she added. “Our website is www.weddingsbyriu.com and there we have a layout of all the packages and everything that we offer.”

A Global Industry Worth Billions

Destination weddings have become one of the fastest-growing segments of the global tourism and events industry. Industry estimates suggest that approximately 17 percent of all weddings worldwide now take place at destination locations, with the sector valued at more than US$43 billion in 2024 and projected to grow significantly in the coming years.

In the Caribbean, Jamaica remains a leader in this niche market. Tourism data indicates that more than 5,000 couples travel to the island annually to get married, drawn by its natural beauty, vibrant culture, and world-renowned hospitality.

Negril, with its famous sunsets, white sand beaches, and relaxed atmosphere, is increasingly emerging as one of the island’s premier wedding destinations.

Garcia Linton noted that the brand has maintained a strong position in the destination wedding market across the Caribbean.

“It is really incredible how we have been able to maintain a high level of weddings through the years, being the number one competitor most of the time — not only for Jamaica but sometimes even for the Caribbean.”

Convenience and Value

The popularity of destination weddings in Jamaica is also driven by the value offered by all-inclusive resorts.

Planning a traditional wedding often involves securing multiple venues, coordinating several vendors, and managing complex logistics. Resorts simplify the process by providing a dedicated team to handle every aspect of the event.

“When you do have your wedding at an all-inclusive, you have everything done for you,” Garcia Linton said. “There is a wedding coordinator that you need, and however magical you want your wedding, that coordinator can make that happen.”

She emphasized that couples are guided through the process from start to finish.

“There is always going to be someone that is going to hold you by the hand, and whatever dream you have, you’re going to make it happen.”

Because many services are already included in the package, couples often find that destination weddings can be surprisingly cost-effective.

“When you compare getting married outside of a hotel and getting married at a hotel, there is a great value for money when living at a hotel with beaches, gardens and versatile venues,” she explained.

Versatile Wedding Settings

Another advantage offered by Jamaica’s resort properties is the wide range of venue options available to couples.

From beachfront ceremonies overlooking the Caribbean Sea to lush tropical gardens and elegant indoor spaces, resorts can accommodate weddings of various sizes and styles.

“We have the garden, we have the beach, and if you want it enclosed we also have enclosed areas,” Garcia Linton said. “So whatever you want, we can actually make it happen.”

She added that RIU works closely with experienced service providers to ensure high-quality wedding experiences.

“We work with different providers, all with exceptional quality, that can help us make those dreams happen.”

Weddings Every Day

Despite global economic shifts and changing travel trends, the demand for destination weddings has remained remarkably resilient.

“Regardless of what is happening in the world, people are getting married,” Garcia Linton observed.

At some of RIU’s Jamaican properties, weddings take place almost every day.

“At Ocho Rios, that is the property that we have with the most weddings. We could have up to three to four every day except Sundays,” she revealed.

Family-friendly resorts tend to host more ceremonies than adults-only properties because wedding groups often include children and extended family members.

Encouraging Jamaicans to Marry at Home

While the majority of destination weddings in Jamaica involve international couples, RIU is also working to attract more local clients and members of the diaspora.

Garcia Linton noted that the number of Jamaican couples choosing resort weddings remains relatively small but is gradually increasing.

“The number of Jamaicans coming to get married at RIU is still very small. We have been able to increase it, but it is still very small,” she said.

Bridal expos and industry events are helping to promote awareness of the convenience and value of local destination weddings.

“I think a lot still has to do with education more than anything else,” she added.

Strengthening Jamaica’s Wedding Tourism Future

As Jamaica prepares to host international wedding professionals at LOVE CARIBBEAN – JAMAICA EDITION  at the Princess, industry stakeholders believe the event will further position the island — and Negril in particular — as a major player in the global wedding tourism market.

With world-class beaches, experienced hospitality teams, and resorts like RIU offering fully customizable wedding experiences, Negril continues to attract couples from around the world looking to celebrate their love in paradise.

For many of them, the island offers not just a wedding venue, but the start of a lifelong journey — framed by sunsets, turquoise waters, and the unmistakable warmth of Jamaican hospitality.
