12 must-listen Jah Cure love songs, plus his Negril connection

Hailing from the parish of Hanover, the very affable Reggae superstar Jah Cure, is gifted with one of the most unique and magnetic voices in Jamaican music.

The Telephone Love singer, whose given name is Siccature Alcock was born on Oct. 11, 1978 in Hanover, Jamaica.

The avid nature-lover spends copious a mounts of his leisure time frolicking in Negril, which happens to be one of his favourite places where he has been seen enjoying himself on the original Tiki Pon Da Sea, parasailing, partying on a yacht, and even jumping 30 feet down into the Blue Hole Mineral Spring, and hurling himself from the cliffs at Rick’s Café. 

In fact, in his song titled Jamaica, he pays homage to the resort town which spans his own home parish and Westmoreland, and in recommending Negril as a perfect vacation spot, paints a vivid picture of it beauty, pointing out that he goes there to chill and has his own perfect spot, where he can “watch the sun go away”.

He has performed extensively in Negril over the years at venues such as Roots Bamboo, Bourbon Beach and at the Negril One Love Concert Winter Series at the Negril Escape Resort.   

Jah Cure was last spotted in Negril in May, on the beach, serenading his mother Panseta Campbell as she celebrating her ’60-something’ birthday, pausing at times to chit-chat with tourists who came there to get a glimpse of him.

Jah Cure came to national attention at age 18, when he performed his King in this Jungle due with Sizzla Kalonji in March 1997, which was met with critical acclaim.

He was nominated for the Best Reggae Album Grammy in 2015, for his album The Cure, which he says, was one of the happiest news he ever received in his life.   

That album which contained songs such as That Girl, Made In California and Rasta, topped the Billboard Reggae Albums chart in its first week of release. Jah Cure reportedly spent in excess of US$70,000 US dollars to record and present it for release with VP Records.   The album tracks were carefully sequenced after being chosen from 35 different songs.

“It sweet me like when a fisherman get a good catch.  And so him go back to that same spot the next time,” he told The Gleaner newspaper in an interview at the time. 

Jah Cure his fourth official studio album, Royal Soldier in 2019.  That album included collaborations with Popcaan, Damian ‘Jr Gong’ Marley,  Capleton, Yami Bolo, and Junior Reid.   Among the tracks on the album were the compelling Telephone Love, Risk It All, Life is Real and  Marijuana.

Royal Soldier debuted at the top of the Billboard Reggae Album chart.  It also charted on iTunes at number one in Belgium, number two in France and the United States, and number three in the United Kingdom.

According to Jah Cure, most of his support comes from the United States and Canada.

The very youthful-looking superstar who celebrates his 43rd birthday tis October says he makes sure that he is in tune with “the ladies” all over the world.

“Beres Hammond taught me an important lesson: sing for the ladies and you can never go wrong.   That is what I do.  When I dress up nice and post a picture on social media, I get hundreds of likes from my female fans,” he said in the newspaper interview.

“I perform on a lot of sold-out shows, and after the concert, the women run backstage to see me, and I enjoy signing the autographs and taking pictures. I like to mingle with my fans. That is the best part of the show, getting that one-on-one with fans,” he said.
